About Me
I'm a freelance writer and photographer, mad kitchen scientist, ambassador of fun, equal opportunity eater, dog-mom, cat lady, road-trip enthusiast and Jersey girl at heart living in the sun-drenched capital of Texas. After studying sociology, writing and photography at Sarah Lawrence College in New York, I traveled around the U.S. and landed in Austin, Texas, where I started down a social work career path. I’ve taught writing classes to women in prison and forensic patients at a state hospital, developed a cooking program for men transitioning out of homelessness and planned therapeutic activities at a children’s home— while freelance writing on the side as a creative outlet. But in 2015, I decided to dive into full-time writing and digital marketing.
I was the Austin editor for Zagat for three years (2015-2018) and my work has appeared online and in print for outlets like Forbes Travel Guide, Food & Wine, Travel & Leisure, Afar, PUNCH, CN Traveler, The Local Palate, Cosmopolitan, Vera, Salt & Wind, Serious Eats, GOOD, The Today Show, Tasting Table, Budget Travel, Vinepair, Nuvo, Paste, Texas Monthly, Texas Highways, Austin Monthly, The Austin-American Statesman, The Austin Chronicle, Thrillist, Houstonia, Range, TimeOut Austin, CultureMap Austin, Edible Austin, Austin Woman and more.
In 2015, I published my first book with Andrews McMeel Publishing: The Fish Sauce Cookbook, which is (you guessed it!) all about fish sauce and its many delicious uses. It features recipes from incredibly talented chefs like Bizarre Foods host Andrew Zimmern, Top Chef Season 12 winner Mei Lin, Stephanie Izard, Stuart Brioza, Linton Hopkins, Michelle Bernstein, Jasper White, Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo... and many more! Find it in your local bookstore or right here on Amazon. (And hear me rap about it on KCRW's Good Food with Evan Kleiman!) In 2019, I collaborated with chef Bryce Gilmore and the rest of the brilliant minds behind the Odd Duck restaurant group (Odd Duck, Sour Duck Market and Barley Swine) to create the first Odd Duck Almanac, a zany ‘zine-inspired community cookbook, and in 2021, I wrote the Hill Country section of Fodor’s 2nd Edition of San Antonio, Austin & The Hill Country Guide.
I am currently the Austin correspondent for The Local Palate, a national magazine dedicated to Southern food culture (sign up for my newsletter here!), and I create all the Austin content for Landing, a company that allows digital nomads to easily move and live between different cities in furnished apartments. I’m also the buyer for Saba San’s, a natural wine and sake shop and club in East Austin, a member of the Austin branch of Les Dames d'Escoffier and I serve on the board of Slow Food Austin, where I plan community events to showcase the farmers, winemakers, chefs, brewers and other producers who embody the nonprofit’s mission of promoting food that is good, clean and fair.
